Plenty of people start their trip with a few days in Marrakech or Essaouira and then head for the coast. It's an easy journey. There's no train to Agadir, so it's buses, shared taxis or a private transfer, and each has a clear trade-off between money, comfort and time.
From Marrakech
It's around 270 kilometres, most of it on the A7 motorway over the edge of the Atlas, then down to Agadir and up the coast.
By bus: the cheap, comfortable way
- CTM leaves from its station on Rue Abou Bakr Seddik in Guéliz. Supratours leaves from the train station, so it's the easy option if you're arriving in Marrakech by train.
- Both have several departures a day. The trip to Agadir takes around four to five hours and costs roughly 80 to 150 dirhams, depending on the company and the service.
- Both arrive in Agadir, not Taghazout. From there take a taxi, or the 32 bus.
- Buy tickets online or at the station a day ahead in busy periods. There's a small charge for big bags.
By shuttle: straight to the village
The Souk to Surf shuttle runs from Marrakech to Taghazout twice a day, takes surfboards, and drops you in the village. It's around 25 euros and about four hours and a quarter. Book online, and check the times before you plan around them.
By shared grand taxi
Shared taxis leave from Bab Doukkala in Marrakech to Inezgane, near Agadir, for around 100 dirhams a seat, in about three and a half to four hours. It's cheap and fast, but you'll be squeezed in with luggage on the roof, and you still need a second taxi from Inezgane. Great if you like an adventure. Less great after a long flight.
By private transfer
The easiest option, door to door in about three and a half hours. Expect to pay roughly 120 to 170 euros for the car, which works out well split between three or four people. Your guesthouse can usually book one.
Driving yourself
The A7 is a good, quiet motorway. Tolls for a car add up to around 70 to 90 dirhams between Marrakech and Agadir, and you pay in cash at the booths. See renting a car.
From Essaouira
This is one of the prettiest drives in Morocco: about three hours south on the N1, through argan country, past Tamri and Imsouane, down the coast to Taghazout.
- Shuttle: Souk to Surf also runs from Essaouira to Taghazout twice a day, for around 18 euros, in a little over three hours.
- Bus: CTM and Supratours run from Essaouira to Agadir, and the road goes right past Taghazout. Some drivers will let you off in the village if you ask. Others won't stop at the roadside, so be ready to carry on to Agadir and come back.
- Private transfer or car: the most flexible, and it means you can stop at Imsouane for a session on the way.
Which one should you pick?
- On a budget, travelling light: CTM or Supratours to Agadir, then the bus.
- With a surfboard: the shuttle, or a private transfer.
- A group of three or four: a private transfer. It's barely more than the bus each, and a lot less hassle.
- Flying in? Compare which airport to fly into first. Agadir is much closer.
