First time on a board
May – Sep
The shortest-period swell of the year and the warmest water. Schools favour the open beaches that still pick up enough to stand up on.
Improving, want longer rides
March to April, or October
The points are working without running at full winter size, and the lineups are thinner than in midwinter.
Experienced, chasing size
Nov – Feb
Long-period north-west groundswell reaches the points and the coast is at its most powerful. Cold enough for a 3/2, and busy on every good day.
Month by month
The bar is the average swell period — how long the waves are, not how big. Under eleven seconds a spot cannot score above 70 on our scale however high the swell is, which is why the summer months read grey.

Water temperature
17.5° in February to 20.9° in September. A 3/2 covers the cold half of the year; a shorty is enough once the water passes 19° in June.
Wind
Offshore wind is most reliable in January — 62% of hours — and least reliable in May at 38%, when the northerly trades blow through the middle of the day.
Crowds
Moroccan holidays fill the beaches and the roads in July and August even when the surf is small. The winter points draw the surf crowd instead, and rooms go early around Christmas and New Year.
Ramadan
Ramadan moves about eleven days earlier each year and is expected to begin around 8 February 2027. Opening hours change while it runs, so check before you travel.

Swell height, swell period and wind are model averages for Taghazout since 1980; sea temperature is a long-term monthly average. Which months suit which level follows our own month-by-month guide. A single week can sit well outside any average. Sources: SwellArchive · seatemperature.org
