Hash Point: the wave in front of the village

Taghazout's own little right, named after surfers too relaxed to walk to Anchor. When it works, who it suits, and what to watch out for.

The story everyone tells about Hash Point is that it got its name from the surfers who were too stoned to walk to Anchor. They paddled out right in front of the village instead, and the name stayed. Nobody can tell you exactly when that was, but walk along the seafront on a sunny afternoon and you'll see it still has that easy, can't-be-bothered-to-go-far feel.

Where it is

Right in front of Taghazout, below the village. From anywhere in town it's a five-minute walk. Café Surf Berbère has a deck directly above it, which makes it the best-watched wave on the coast: you'll have an audience.

How the wave works

A short, soft right over rock and reef with sand around it. On a good day it's a fun, rolling little point. On a bad day it's a wedgy mess. It needs a swell with some west in it to wrap into the bay, and even then it's fickle. When it's on, it's usually between one and four feet, which is exactly why it's popular with surf schools, improvers and the local kids who basically grew up on it.

  • Swell: west to north-west, small to medium
  • Wind: north-east offshore, cleanest in the morning
  • Tide: mid to high. At very low tide rocks come up through the line-up.
  • Level: beginners and improvers on small days. When it gets bigger it gets more serious.

Things to know

  • Watch the rocks. They're not far under you at low tide, and some of them are sharp.
  • Water quality. There's a drain outlet near the village, and after rain the water here isn't great. If it's rained in the last day or two, go somewhere else.
  • The crowd. On small clean mornings there can be a surf school, a dozen kids and a few visitors all on the same little peak. Be patient and friendly. The kids are better than you.

Why it's still worth it

You can roll out of bed, walk down, surf, and be eating msemen on the terrace above twenty minutes after you get out. On a small day, that's hard to beat. And if Hash Point isn't working, Panoramas at the other end of the village might be.
