The coast at a glance

Where to surf between Anza and Tamri

The coast north of Agadir is a run of right-hand point breaks with beach breaks in between. Points need a proper Atlantic swell to wake up; the beaches work on smaller days, which is why they are where most lessons happen.

Beginners do best at Devils Rock and Crocro in Tamraght, at Anza, and in the bay at Imsouane, about an hour north. Intermediates move on to Hash Point, Banana Point, Panoramas and La Source once they can paddle and take off on their own. Anchor Point, Killer Point, Boilers and Draculas are for experienced surfers: long paddles, rocks and fast, powerful walls.

The main season runs from October to March, when North Atlantic swells arrive and the points break most days. Summer is smaller and windier in the afternoon, which suits beginners. Most spots work best on a mid tide, and the mornings are usually glassy before the wind picks up.

Questions people ask

Which surf spot is best for beginners in Taghazout?

Devils Rock and Crocro in Tamraght are the friendliest: sandy bottoms, gentle peaks and surf schools on the beach every morning. On bigger days, the bay at Imsouane stays small and soft.

When is the best time of year to surf in Taghazout?

October to March brings the most consistent swell and the point breaks come alive. Summer has smaller waves and warmer water, which is easier for learning.

Do I need a wetsuit in Taghazout?

Yes, all year. The water is around 17 °C in winter, so wear a 4/3 mm suit, and about 21 °C in late summer, when a 3/2 mm is enough.

Is Anchor Point good for beginners?

No. Anchor Point needs a big swell, breaks over rock and is crowded with experienced surfers. Watch it from the cliff, and surf Devils Rock or Crocro instead.
